A brief history of Highclere...

Highclere Castle, an iconic example of Victorian architecture, has a rich history dating back to the 8th century. Originally a medieval palace owned by the Bishops of Winchester, the estate was transformed into a grand manor in the late 14th century. The property came into the possession of the Carnarvon family in 1679 when Sir Robert Sawyer, an ancestor of the Earls of Carnarvon, purchased it.

The castle, as it stands today, was designed by Sir Charles Barry, the architect of the Houses of Parliament, in the mid-19th century. Commissioned by the 3rd Earl of Carnarvon, the transformation into a Jacobethan-style mansion was completed in 1878. Highclere Castle became renowned not only for its architectural splendour but also for its opulent interiors and expansive grounds.

Highclere's historical significance is further enriched by the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who, along with Howard Carter, discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. The castle's cellars house an extensive collection of Egyptian artifacts from this era.

In recent years, Highclere Castle gained international fame as the primary filming location for the television series "Downton Abbey," drawing visitors from around the world. Today, it remains the family home of the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon and is a beloved heritage site, offering tours and events that allow the public to explore its storied past and stunning architecture.
